Julian is an insolvency and dispute resolution specialist, with extensive experience of proceedings across a broad range of industries and sectors.

Julian’s insolvency practice covers both corporate and personal insolvency. He acts for insolvency practitioners, creditors, debtors and all other stakeholders in the insolvency process. Julian's particular focus is on court driven and contentious insolvency matters, including Insolvency Act applications; Court appointed receiverships; full-blown litigation; and other forms of dispute resolution.

He is part of Stephenson Harwood’s Chambers-ranked Tier 1 personal insolvency practice, which revolves around insolvent individuals with multi-million pound debts and global assets.

He sits on the technical committee of R3, the trade association for the insolvency and restructuring profession in the UK.

Julian also advises in relation to commercial disputes across a broad range of industries and sectors. This includes both domestic proceedings, as well as international and cross-border litigation strategies and managing and co-ordinating litigation in different jurisdictions.

Julian has been ranked by the legal directories for both insolvency and sports law. Recent career highlights include advising the Liquidators of Rangers Football Club; and the Trustees in Bankruptcy of Boris Becker.

Acting for the Liquidators of Rangers Football Club on all aspects of the litigation in both England and Scotland including multi-million pound claims in unlawful means conspiracy.

Dawnay Day

Acting for the liquidators of various companies connected with the collapsed Dawnay Day conglomerate.

MK Airlines

Advising the liquidators on various issues arising out of a failed freight airline company

Miss Sixty

Advising the former administrators and CVA supervisors following the decision in Mourant Trustees v Hollis

Insolvency Practitioners – insolvency work

Advises officeholders on all aspects of corporate and personal insolvency matters. His particular focus is court driven and contentious matters, including full-blown litigation, Insolvency Act applications, and other forms of dispute resolution. His recent corporate insolvency experience includes acting for the liquidators of Rangers Football Club and acting for the liquidators of various companies connected with the collapsed Dawnay Day conglomerate; whilst his recent personal insolvency experience includes acting for the Trustees in Bankruptcy of the ex-oligarch Georgy Trefilov, once Russia's 78th richest man.

Insolvency Practitioners – professional indemnity

Advising an international firm of accountants on protecting confidential information following a fee-earner's transfer to another firm; advising in relation to a claim brought against ex office-holders of a significant insolvent estate; advising an ex CVA Supervisor and Administrator following a successful challenge to the CVA that resulted in the officeholder become embroiled in regulatory disciplinary proceedings (Miss Sixty); advising a Trustee in Bankruptcy in relation to personal claims brought by the bankrupt; and making a claim in professional negligence against the former solicitors of an office-holder for their failure to implement a successful exit strategy from doomed litigation.

Accountancy firms

Experience includes numerous claims in professional negligence, for example asserting a claim against an international accountancy practice for their failure to spot that dividends had been paid up to a holding company in breach of Companies Act provisions; and defending a Big 4 firm of accountants against claims for negligent tax advice. Julian also regularly advises accountancy firms on the receiving end of information gathering applications made under Insolvency Act 1986.
