Caroline is a managing associate in the international arbitration and commercial litigation department. For nearly a decade she has routinely acted for a wide range of international and leading regional corporates, financial institutions, high-net worth individuals/families, and quasi government/governmental entities on complex cross-border and high-value disputes, with a focus on fraud, asset recovery and financial litigation.

Caroline has nearly ten years' experience of advising clients throughout the Middle East, UK and Europe, and Asia on complex, high-value, cross-border disputes.

She advises clients across a range of industries including financial services, technology, construction, oil and gas, life sciences, media and entertainment, sports, and private wealth.

Having been based in the Middle East region for several years, Caroline frequently handles cases before the DIFC Courts and has significant experience acting on complex commercial litigation matters before the English High Court. She also coordinates the strategy for claims in the onshore UAE Courts.

In addition, she has acted on numerous arbitration matters before local and international centres, including the ICC, DIAC, LCIA, HKIAC, UNCITRAL and ICSID, which have been seated in various jurisdictions such as the UAE, Paris, London and Hong Kong.

Caroline is a seasoned author and frequently co-authors Q&A Guides as well as insight articles for many of the leading publications. This has included acting as a co-author of The Legal 500's Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters – UAE Chapter.

As a result of her work, reputation, and standing in the market Caroline was shortlisted as "Arbitration Lawyer of the Year" at the LexisNexis Middle East Women in Law Awards 2023.

Prior to relocating to the UAE, Caroline trained and qualified as a lawyer in one of the leading disputes practices in London and additionally spent two years practicing in Hong Kong where she acted on a range of fraud and insolvency matters. She also spent six months working in the arbitration practice of an international law firm in Paris.

Acting for a UAE Port Authority (as Respondent) in a multi-million dollar dispute with a UAE subcontractor (as Claimant) engaged to dredge the port under a contract governed by the laws of the United Arab Emirates (“UAE Law”). The Claimant initiated ICC arbitration proceedings.  In the final award the arbitral tribunal stated the Claimant had not been successful in its claims and consider it to be the unsuccessful party.

Acting for a UAE government entity operating in the construction sector in relation to a dispute with a global contractor relating to a number of technical issues, including the extension of time claims, the right to delay penalties and other matters connected with the construction of a new flagship hotel and residential tower in Dubai, UAE.

Managing the global strategy for enforcement of a US$20 million arbitration award on behalf of a Korean shipbuilder, including obtaining orders equivalent to freezing injunctions in South Korea and third party debt orders in the Netherlands where this action induced the award debtor to settle for a sum close to the entire award debt.

Assisting a Hong Kong and Singapore based private equity firm on DIFC Court proceedings against two UAE-incorporated companies and three personal guarantors in relation to claims to an outstanding principal multi-million dollar loan under a facility agreement to the UAE-incorporated companies to purchase mining equipment in India.

Acting for a UAE employer in defending an ICC claim brought by the main contractor of an oil terminal under an EPC Contract and advising on counterclaims for delays and defective works.

Acting for a UAE government entity in defending a DIFC-LCIA arbitration brought by a foreign entity under an English law contract and advising on counterclaims for breach of contract.

Acting for the interim receivers appointed by the High Court of Hong Kong over a private equity fund in defending a high-value and complex ICC arbitration claim.

Acting for a South American government entity in the oil and gas industry in defending an ICSID claim for expropriation of assets that had been held by a foreign investor.

Managing the defence of a HKIAC arbitration brought by a software manufacturer against a bank for compensation allegedly owed for software development and implementation services.

Acting for one of the former senior executives of the Abraaj Group, the global private equity firm, in proceedings brought against him by the DFSA in the DIFC Courts seeking a worldwide freezing order over his personal assets.

Acting for Grant Thornton UK LLP, in their capacity as exclusive claims advisor, to recover the largest portfolio of debts within an asset recovery fund (backed by a major US investment firm) that had purchased a portfolio of non-performing loans a from a major international bank in the UAE. This included obtaining a judgement against the debtors from the Court of Cassation in the UAE.

Acting for a group of individuals in bringing a successful claim against an individual and group of companies in the High Court of Hong Kong for their role in a suspected Ponzi scheme.

Acting for a US company in bringing a fraud claim against overseas entities involved in a cybercrime scam.

Acting for the interim receivers appointed by the High Court of Hong Kong over a private equity fund in defending a high-value and complex ICC arbitration claim which included extensive allegations of fraud. 

Advising on ad hoc regulatory compliance issues ranging from data protection, sports law, procurement law and bribery and corruption legislation.
