Afolarin is an associate in Stephenson Harwood’s international arbitration and commercial litigation practice groups.  He has experience in high value international arbitration and multi-jurisdictional commercial litigation.

Afolarin has represented states, state entities and large multinational companies in international arbitrations conducted under the rules of the major arbitral institutions, including the LCIA, ICSID and ICC, in disputes arising from a range of industries including oil and gas, construction and telecommunications.

He has also represented clients in English High Court proceedings, particularly in relation to obtaining interim injunctions in support of foreign and arbitral proceedings and the enforcement of arbitral awards.

Afolarin was seconded to the firm’s Dubai office, where he advised clients in the energy industry on international sanctions compliance and represented a client in a multijurisdictional dispute involving the purchase of gas oil in Nigeria.

Afolarin has contributed to publications on arbitration in Africa, the Global Arbitration Review, Practical Law Arbitration Blog and Practical Law’s arbitration case updates.

Oil and gas dispute

Advising a Swiss company in a multijurisdictional dispute relating to the purchase of gas oil in Nigeria. In the English High Court proceedings we secured three separate injunctions which resulted in a favourable settlement for the client.

Shareholder dispute

Representing shareholders of a renewable energy company in the English High Court proceedings of a high value, multijurisdictional shareholder dispute.

Shareholder dispute

Advising the shareholder of an East African logistics company in relation to a multijurisdictional shareholder dispute.

Fraud investigation

Advising a Nigerian bank in relation to a fraud investigation concerning debtors who had been prosecuted by the SFO in Crown Court Proceedings.

Acting as co-counsel for a Middle Eastern state in an arbitration relating to an investment in the telecommunications sector.

LCIA arbitration

Representing a Middle Eastern state in an arbitration arising out of a contract to construct a power plant. The case concerned issues of force majeure and counterclaims exceed US$600 million.

ICC arbitration

Representing a European company in an ICC arbitration relating to the cross-border supply of electricity and concerning a force majeure event.

Representing a Russian company in a dispute relating to the supply of forestry products.

Representing a Swiss company in a high value LCIA arbitration relating to the purchase of oil and gas in Nigeria.
