Timothy Cooke collects GAR Award for CIArb Guidelines

Stephenson Harwood partner Timothy Cooke has collected the award for ‘Best innovation by an individual or organisation’ at the Global Arbitration Review (GAR) Awards 2020 for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ (CIArb) Guidelines for Witness Conferencing in International Arbitration, which he conceived and helped to draft. The award ceremony took place virtually during Paris Arbitration Week 2020.

The Guidelines, which were published in April 2019, are a practical document for use by parties, arbitrators and experts in the preparation for, and presentation of, evidence by witnesses in conference. They were devised by Cooke, who also led the consultation and drafting process. They comprise a checklist of factors to consider in determining whether and how to hold a witness conference, suggested procedural orders and detailed explanatory notes. The Guidelines can be accessed here.

Cooke is based in the firm’s Singapore office. He advises on, and acts as counsel in, arbitrations under the rules of the major arbitral institutions, with a particular focus on energy, infrastructure and other investment disputes.
