On 16 February 2021, following a mandate from the Government, Robert Penrose MP published a comprehensive report, entitled "Power to the People", which provides an assessment of the state of competition and consumer enforcement in the UK; putting forward a number of far-reaching, ambitious and diverse proposals to reform the regime, in order to "build back better" post-Brexit and post-Covid-19.
The proposals aim to address the key issues of the moment, including tackling digital markets, encouraging stronger regulatory enforcement whilst cutting red tape, and ensuring that the regime does not favour large, incumbent firms at the expense of smaller, entrepreneurial companies. If implemented, the proposed reforms would dramatically reshape the UK's competition and consumer regime.
This briefing highlights the main proposals included in the report and briefly notes the potential impact of these on companies doing business in the UK.
