Stephenson Harwood strengthens practice in China

Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has strengthened its ship finance and commercial litigation practices in Shanghai with the addition of partner ‎Vincent Xu and the relocation of partner Evangeline Quek from Hong Kong.

Mr. Xu, who brings more than 15 years of experience both in-house and in private practice, has extensive knowledge of the shipping industry with a strong focus on non-contentious ship finance and energy matters including asset and project finance, leasing, restructuring, shipbuilding and offshore construction. He joins the firm from Ince & Co.

"China has one of the largest shipbuilding industries and six of the world's ten largest ports; a strong Shanghai office is important to growing our shipping practice in the country," said Ian Mace, head of Stephenson Harwood's ship and offshore finance practice. "Vincent's strong reputation, experience and expertise complements our existing strengths and enables us to enhance our support to clients across the Asia Pacific region."

Ms. Quek specialises in commercial dispute resolution, focusing in particular on contentious shipping matters such as charterparty, cargo defence, shipbuilding, bunkering and ship financing disputes. Her clients include International Group P&I clubs and shipowners in the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. She practiced in Singapore before moving to Hong Kong in 2008, speaks fluent Mandarin and conversational Cantonese, and is qualified to practice English law and Hong Kong law.

"Shanghai is a natural target for expansion given its position as the leading commercial city in China," said Voon Keat Lai, managing partner of Stephenson Harwood in Greater China. "Redeploying Evangeline from Hong Kong to Shanghai will be invaluable in strengthening the ties between the offices and delivering seamless support to our clients throughout China, and clients investing there."
