Stephenson Harwood recruits renowned marine and energy insurance specialist Joe O'Keeffe

Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has strengthened its marine and international trade practice with the addition of Joe O'Keeffe as a partner in its London office. O'Keeffe joins the firm from Ince & Co, where he held the position of global head of insurance.

With 27 years' experience, O'Keeffe is a well-known figure in the London market. He has particular expertise advising insurers in relation to coverage issues, casualties and disputed claims arising in the marine and energy sectors. His experience in marine insurance spans hull and machinery, war, loss of hire, builders’ risks, yachts, cargo and specie, P&I and other marine liabilities. In the energy insurance sector, his experience covers on- and off-shore property and liability risks arising under CAR covers and operators’ package policies. Over the last 15 years he has been instructed on many of the largest losses to impact the marine and energy insurance market. O'Keeffe also has an established international trade practice, having acted for many years for commodity traders and banks as well as end-users across the full spectrum of advisory and disputes work.

“Marine insurance is a growing specialism of the firm,” said Mike Phillips, head of marine and international trade, Stephenson Harwood. “Joe's experience complements that of the existing team, bolstering our expertise within both the wet marine casualty market and the energy sector.”

Alex Davis, head of marine insurance, Stephenson Harwood, said: “the marine insurance market has undergone significant changes over recent years; adding Joe’s practice to our current offering cements our position in the top tier of marine insurance coverage practices in the City, allowing us to thrive and grow in this changing landscape.”

The Stephenson Harwood MIT practice offers services to clients in the shipping, offshore and commodity sectors. Clients include many of the world's largest shipowners, shipyards, major ship finance banks, marine insurers and IG P&I clubs, energy services companies, oil and gas companies and commodities traders.
