Stephenson Harwood hosts inaugural Women in Shipping event

Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has hosted its inaugural networking event specifically for women involved in the shipping industry. Held in Oslo, Norway, on 26 September, the event welcomed 40 women.

“This event was about bringing the spotlight onto the progress we are making within the industry in terms of diversity and inclusion – and, in particular, about identifying and bringing forward the next generation of female leaders in shipping,” said Teah Sloan, senior associate, Stephenson Harwood. “By creating a space for women in the industry to network, share experiences and support each other as we advance in our careers, we aim to be part of the ongoing effort to increase the number of senior women in shipping, and to make the path easier for the upcoming generations.”

“Across business, this is a really exciting time in terms of the growth of women in senior leadership roles,” said Sue Millar, partner, Stephenson Harwood. “As a firm, we are committed to creating a diverse workforce, and to harnessing the benefits of having a range of backgrounds and experiences across our teams. Embracing these differences not only allows us to do business and understand our clients better, approach complex legal challenges from new angles and more accurately reflect the communities in which we work, it's also simply the right thing to do. We are also conscious of our role in improving diversity beyond our own profession; this event demonstrates our desire to extend these efforts across some of the key sectors in which we operate.”

The Stephenson Harwood marine and international trade (MIT) group is known for being at the fore of industry developments, having been immersed in the maritime industry for the best part of a century. The Women in Shipping event is part of the group's efforts to extend its reach as a leader in the industry.

The Stephenson Harwood MIT practice offers services to clients in the shipping, offshore and commodity sectors. Clients include many of the world's largest shipowners, shipyards, major ship finance banks, marine insurers and IG P&I clubs, energy services companies, oil and gas companies and commodities traders. In 2017, the firm received the 'Maritime Law Award' at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia, the 'Maritime Law Award' at the Lloyd's List Global Awards, 'International Shipping & Aviation Firm of the Year' at the China Law & Practice Awards, and 'Transport Law Firm of the Year' at the Legal 500 UK Awards.
