Stephenson Harwood and Essex Court Chambers win 'Africa’s Strategic Partner of the Year 2016'

Stephenson Harwood and Essex Court‎ Chambers have won 'Africa's Strategic Partner of the Year 2016' at the Law Digest Awards. The award, judged by representatives from five African Law Societies, was in recognition of Stephenson Harwood's and Essex Court's combined expertise in Africa, commitment to training, secondments and knowledge exchange on the continent, as well as the key mandates and cases worked on.

The Law Digest Awards, held in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier this month, highlighted excellence in the African legal services market and recognised the contributions of individual lawyers and law firms operating throughout Africa.

"We have worked in Africa for many years and have a dedicated Africa law practice," said Stephenson Harwood partner and Africa practice leader Kamal Shah. "We work closely with Essex Court Chambers, particularly in relation to litigation and arbitration matters on the continent, and work in partnership on projects in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. This accolade reflects our commitment to offering market leading advice in Africa, and to working collaboratively with firms on the continent to support the further development of the legal expertise available."

"Like Stephenson Harwood, we are committed to supporting the legal sector across the globe, and have a particular focus on Africa," said David Grief, Senior Clerk at Essex Court Chambers. "Africa is an extremely exciting legal market.  We are pleased that our dedication to the continent has been recognised through this award, and look forward to continuing to invest in our various training, secondment and knowledge sharing initiatives throughout Africa."

Illustrating the firm's understanding of Africa, Shah has recently written a book, Arbitration in Africa: a Review of Key Jurisdictions, in conjunction with John Miles (managing director of JMiles & Co, Nairobi) and Tunde Fagbohunlu SAN (partner, head of litigation, arbitration and ADR Groups, Aluko & Oyebode, Lagos). The book is available from Sweet & Maxwell.
