Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has strengthened its energy group with the addition of partner Marc Hammerson, who re-joins the firm's London office.

Hammerson, who brings more than 24 years' experience advising clients in the energy sector, specialises in upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas, including LNG and pipelines/infrastructure projects and power generation. He has extensive experience advising energy majors and independent energy companies and particular expertise in Africa and the Middle East.

"Energy and natural resources is one of the firm's key industry sectors and we expect to continue to see increased activity in the market, especially with the stronger oil price," said Andrew Edge, head of corporate, Stephenson Harwood. "Marc is a seasoned, experienced energy practitioner with an excellent track record and strong reputation in the market. Clients in the energy sector want to work with lawyers who understand how complex deals are structured and can operate in challenging jurisdictions. Marc fits this perfectly. On a personal level, I'm looking forward to welcoming him back to the firm and to working alongside him again."

Hammerson, who returns to Stephenson Harwood having been a partner at the firm between 2006 and 2011, joins from Akin Gump.

"In addition to traditional upstream oil and gas transactions we're seeing a growing number of clients needing support relating to the development of new midstream and downstream projects and disputes, particularly in emerging markets and an increased interest from financial investors arising from distressed situations," said Tony Edwards, partner in the Africa and energy groups, Stephenson Harwood. "These are all areas where having a lawyer of Marc's calibre will enhance our ability to offer the very best support to our clients."

Stephenson Harwood's cross-practice energy group draws on the experience of more than twenty partners from across the firm's international offices. It provides corporate finance, finance, commercial and dispute resolution support to a diverse range of clients with interests in oil and gas, offshore power and renewables and mining and minerals.
