Mike Phillips named one of the 'Top 10 maritime lawyers' in 2017

Stephenson Harwood partner Mike Phillips has been named one of the 'Top 10 maritime lawyers' in 2017 by Lloyd's List, the shipping publication. The accolade, part of Lloyd's List's 'Top 100' annual review of the 100 most influential people in shipping, recognises Phillips' market-leading reputation as a maritime legal practitioner, and as head of the firm's successful marine and international trade (MIT) practice.

The award reflects the growing success and stature of the MIT practice, with Lloyd's List's commentary referring to leading cases in which the team has been involved. Partner Duncan McDonald's work on leading general average case, the MV Longchamp, and partner Simon Moore's leading insurance case, the B Atlantic, both earned a mention.

London-based Phillips specialises in shipping, carriage of goods, contentious ship finance disputes and ship and offshore vessel construction; his clients include banks, shipowners, traders and P&I clubs/insurers. Recent work includes successful enforcement of multi-million dollar loan facilities against Iranian interests, and a high profile ship fire involving a cargo of ammonium nitrate.

The 'Top 10 maritime lawyers' list is collated by the Lloyd’s List editorial team in conjunction with Informa Law, publishers of the Lloyd’s Law Reports. It considers individuals with an impact across maritime law, including influential cases, major and novel transactions, M&As, and those who use their legal skills to make a special contribution to the shipping industry.

This accolade follows Stephenson Harwood's success at Lloyd’s List Global Awards 2017, where the firm won the Maritime Law Award.
