Janice Yau Garton Joins Stephenson Harwood as partner

Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has added to its real estate capabilities with the arrival of partner Janice Yau Garton, who joins the firm in Hong Kong.

“Despite the economic challenges of 2020, both the Hong Kong and mainland China property markets remain resilient,” said Kevin Lee, head of Stephenson Harwood’s corporate practice in Hong Kong, in which the real estate team sits. “Many are predicting continued growth this year – especially in Hong Kong – which will be driven by the investment appetite from mainland players and private equity funds. Having a lawyer of Janice’s calibre join our established real estate team enables us to continue to meet the needs of our current clients, as well as support future clients in this active sector.”

Garton has extensive experience advising on cross-border real estate transactions, specialising in real estate investments and acting for institutional investors, funds, hospitality groups, retail brands, property development companies and private equity firms, including REITs.

“Our sophisticated and specialised real estate practice has a track record of supporting clients with their commercial developments, acquisitions, project management and investment structures,” said Jamie Stranger, Stephenson Harwood’s Greater China office managing partner. “Janice is not only a highly rated lawyer in the regional real estate market, her international perspective and experience, alongside her personality, makes her a great fit for the firm.”

Garton was named as a ‘rising star’ in the 2020 edition of The Asia Pacific Legal 500 and is qualified to practice in Hong Kong, Canada and British Columbia. She joins the firm from DLA Piper, where she was Of Counsel.

Stephenson Harwood’s real estate practice covers all aspects of property related transactions and disputes, advising private developers, publicly listed companies and Government authorities. Expertise includes property development and management, dispute resolution and tax and estate planning.
