Data Protection update - January / February 2014

Welcome to the January 2014 edition of our Data Protection update, our monthly bulletin on key developments in data protection law.

May we also take this opportunity to wish you a happy European Data Protection Day (28 January 2014)! This is the eighth annual celebration aimed at raising awareness and promoting data protection education.

In this issue, we focus on cyber theft. We cover the recent theft of personal data of over 40 million customers at US retail store Target and also outline the new Government campaign recently launched called "Cyber Streetwise", which is dedicated to helping individuals and businesses to protect their personal data online.

We outline new guidance for protecting personal data when developing and downloading apps on mobile devices, and we also revisit Google as it appeals the fine imposed by the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) following Google's failure to make changes to its consolidated privacy policy.

Finally, we provide our regular update on the EU Data Protection reforms, as Greece replaces Lithuania and takes on the presidency of the EU. We consider a recently leaked report from the European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) focussing on its views on Safe Harbor, and we also outline a helpful summary produced by the ICO on its views on LIBE's approach to the draft Data Protection Regulation.
