Data Protection update - January 2015

Welcome to the January 2015 edition of our Data Protection update, our monthly bulletin on key developments in data protection law.

In this issue, we summarise the proposed new US Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights and the new streamlined procedure for notifying the French data protection authority about recording workplace telephone calls.

We also look at the recent steps taken by the Dutch data protection authority in respect of Facebook and Google. Further, we update you on the new effective date of the Russian Data Localisation Law and the US Federal Trade Commission's order imposed on Snapchat.

In our cybersecurity section, we consider how the UK is working with the US to test its cyber defences and new US cybersecurity initiatives. We also discuss Moonpig's decision to suspend its mobile application due to data security concerns.

Finally, we continue to keep you up to date with the latest enforcement activity of the ICO, and two recent decisions involving the personal information exemption from freedom of information requests and the journalism exemption from subject access requests.
