Our activities in Iran date back as far as the mid-1970s. We were a key player in the resolution of the US hostage situation in Iran. We acted for Bank Markazi in relation to the freezing of Iranian money by the US. A key factor delaying the release of the US hostages was the unfreezing of Iranian money. We devised the actual means by which this could be done.

Our clients include some of the largest Iranian and Iranian-owned commercial enterprises.  We advise companies across the spectrum of the Iranian economy, including in the banking, shipping, energy, life sciences and commodities sectors.

We have continued to advise our Iranian clients throughout the recent period of sanctions, including in relation to their litigation and arbitration requirements in multiple jurisdictions using our network of international offices and relationships with local lawyers.  We have acted on some of the most high-profile and complex challenges to sanctions in the UK and EU courts.

Our dedicated Iran group is made up of representatives from our international offices and across practice areas.  With the anticipated lifting of sanctions, we have the local and international connections and in-depth knowledge to assist on inbound and outbound investment.

‘Top-notch for Iran and sanctions work’, Stephenson Harwood is noted for its ‘knowledgeable and practical approach to Iran matters.’
