Stuart combines deep expertise as a finance and projects lawyer to a range of participants in the maritime, offshore and energy sectors with broad international experience having spent significant periods of his career in Asia, continental Europe and London.

Stuart began his career as a maritime lawyer in London in 1988, moving to Singapore in December 1988. He spent more than eight years in Singapore, followed by seven in Paris. Stuart’s headline matters include a number of high profile LNG shipping projects over the course of the last 25 years, acting mainly for shipowners and charterers. He has advised on projects in Algeria, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the US and Norway. He counselled a number of joint venture owners providing tonnage to the Yamal LNG project advising on a total of 13 of the ships serving the project. He recently advised on the high profile FSO ‘Safer’ matter which involved the safe transhipment of over 1,000,000 barrels of oil and the removal of FSO ‘Safer’ from Yemeni waters where it might have caused a significant environmental disaster. Stuart is a member of BIMCO’s Documentary Drafting Sub-Committee.

Acting for a lending syndicate in relation to the US$1.1 billion financing of nine post Panamax container ships built at an Asian shipyard,

Acting for a French banking syndicate in relation to a US$900 million facility to a major cruise line company to finance the acquisition of cruise ships built at a French shipyard.

Advising the shipowners in relation to the construction of five Arc 7 LNG carriers at an Asian shipyard.

Advising the shipowners in relation to the construction of a pair of condensate tankers, one at an Asian yard and the other at a European yard.

Advising an international organisation in relation to the replacement and removal of FSO ‘Safer’ from waters offshore Yemen

Advising the shipowners in relation to charterparty documentation for 13 vessels chartered to an LNG project on a long term basis; advising the client on multiple aspects of the project documentation (including significant financings).

Advising a German owner in relation to newbuilding contracts for multi purpose vessels to be built at Chinese yards and joint venture documents with another German owner in relation to a vessel ownership joint venture.

Advising a Japanese owner in relation to the long term charter of two newbuild LNG vessels to a German energy company.

Advising Algerian interests in relation to an LNG ship charter transaction to a Japanese joint venture company.
