Simon is an associate in the marine and international trade department. He has a broad range of contentious and transactional experience, particularly in the commodities sector.

Simon’s experience comprises various cases conducted under different arbitral rules (GAFTA, FOSFA, LMAA, LCIA and UNCITRAL), as well as High Court litigation and subsequent enforcement. His transactional work includes assisting a global food producer with a variety of contracts.

He has acted for a wide range of clients, including agribusinesses, commodities traders, state-owned companies, shipowners and charterers.

Drilling contract – UNCITRAL arbitration

Acted for a large South American state-owned oil and gas company in relation to a complex Paris-seated arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules, arising out of a foreign law contract for the provision of a drillship and drilling services.

Commodities trader – GAFTA arbitration

Advised an Asian commodities trader in its successful defence of claims brought by one of the world’s largest commodities traders concerning the sale of yellow peas.

Metal concentrates – LCIA arbitration

Acted for the buyers in a series of quality and other disputes with a major trading company relating to the supply of copper, lead and zinc concentrates.

Direct reduced iron – LCIA arbitration

Assisted one of the UK’s largest steel trading and distribution companies in successful claims brought against a South American steel trader for non-delivery of direct reduced iron.

South American commodities trader

Advising a South American commodities trader regarding disputes under the GAFTA and FOSFA Rules, arising out of the sale of soya beans. 

Hot and cold rolled steel – LCIA arbitration

Acted for the sellers in their successful claims brought against a West African producer and distributor of steel products for the failure to pay the purchase price of the goods. 

Shipowners – collision

Acted for a Russian shipowner in its successful claims in the High Court arising out a collision involving numerous vessels.

Vessel casualty – LMAA arbitration

Acting for the charterers in disputes arising out of a time charterparty on an amended NYPE 1946 form. Coordinating work of foreign lawyers in respect of potential claims by cargo interests following vessel casualty in South America.

Owners – LMAA arbitration

Acted for the shipowners in obtaining a prompt arbitration award for claims against charterers in respect of unpaid hire and disbursements.
