Peter is a technology lawyer with over a decade of experience in the fields of technology disputes, cybersecurity, and technology focused intellectual property. His holistic technology practice allows him to provide comprehensive advice on business-critical technology matters and disputes, and complex and at times “bet the company” cyber mandates.

On the technology disputes side, Peter has regularly acted for both suppliers and customers in respect of a diverse range of disputes, contractual resets, and renegotiations including substantial distressed IT projects and implementations, software development disputes, and software audit disputes.

In respect of cyber, Peter has considerable experience advising on the full range of cyber advisory, incident response, and litigation matters, often on a global basis.  He has acted for large multinationals, financial institutions, and household names in respect of pre-incident legal preparation and policies, incident response, regulatory advice and regulator engagement. His experience in cyber response and crisis management has focused on complex business-critical incidents including nation-state espionage, ransomware attacks and BEC fraud. He also advises clients in respect of litigation arising from incidents, both within the supply chain and with data subjects. 

Having originally qualified as an intellectual property lawyer, Peter has a deep well of experience in technology related patent and other IP matters, including software and hardware patent infringement claims, source code copying and other digital asset disputes, and licensing disputes. He has represented clients in the IPEC and Patents Court and regularly assists clients with licensing and other advisory services relating to technology IP management.

Advising an IT supplier in respect of a distressed IT implementation for a large government organisation, through to protected negotiations and project reset.

Advising in complex and lengthy IT disputes and contract reset negotiations in respect of a c.£100s of millions IT project between an IT supplier and a global corporate customer; advising on various connected disputes and providing "on-premises" active contract and disputes support to the supplier client including in protracted face-to-face negotiations with the customer's legal team.

Advising a global customer in respect of a high-value software audit / licensing dispute with a vendor impacting a business-critical system.

Advising the customer in respect of a failed IT implementation, engaging in pre-action settlement discussions leading to a managed exit; advising on the IP issues relating to the exit and ensuring that the customer had the necessary rights to use software delivered to date and complete the system with a new contractor; negotiating settlement and exit terms.

Representing a financial services technology platform company in respect of High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings, and in a separate action against a software developer in respect of contracts for the supply of financial trading platforms in SE Asia.

Advising a global IT services provider acting as systems integrator in respect of a distressed project involving difficult technical issues and complicated termination and IP ownership disputes between the customer and client; assisting in the negotiation of a managed exit and settlement.

Software supplier

Advising a software supplier in respect of a dispute with a customer relating to a code defect in supplied software which caused consequential losses to the customer and its own customers, including on liability and settlement negotiations.

Leading national broadcaster and media company

Advising a leading broadcaster to defend patent infringement proceedings issued in the Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court (IPEC) relating to broadcast monitoring technology.

Technology company

Representing the claimant in registered and unregistered design infringement claim relating to heart rate monitor technology sports watches, heard in a 5-day trial in the Patents Court and acting in the subsequent appeal to the Court of Appeal.

Maritime technology company

Advising in the defence of proceedings issued in the Patents Court involving patent infringement, source code copying and design infringement claims in respect of tracking technology, through to settlement just before trial.

Advising a global financial services corporate in respect of a business-critical ransomware attack and data breach. Immediate crisis response, regulatory notifications and engagement, appointing and instructing forensic specialists, advising on limiting financial obligations to third parties.

Global corporate

Assisting a global corporate client to identify and restrain the misuse of confidential information to publish harmful and defamatory reports and statements online and coordinating with forensic investigators to identify the likely source of the attack.

M&A client

Advising a buyer on potential losses to the target in the context of an M&A transaction during which the target suffered a ransomware attack and data breach impacting data subjects across over 100 jurisdictions.

Global financial services corporate

Advising a financial services corporate in respect of a ransomware attack and data breach, including working with forensic advisors, deep dive analysis of impacted data, advising on data privacy notification requirements and strategy, coordinating and preparing data subject notifications and multiple regulator notifications. Advising on follow up pre-action litigation threats. 

Ransomware victim

Acting for an impacted ransomware corporate in respect of data privacy / GDPR claims raised by groups of allegedly impacted data subjects.

Financial services corporate

Advising a financial services corporate in respect of a BEC fraud / man in the middle attack including analysis to identify fraud tactics and advise on the risk of internal compromise, advising on the chances of recovery and engagement with the relevant counterparty, data privacy notification requirements and communications with insurers.
