James qualified as a shipping litigation lawyer in 2006 and has since worked in shipping litigation and arbitration, across many jurisdictions globally both in private practice, as legal counsel at a shipowner and at leading P&I clubs on both P&I and FD&D claims.

James assisted a shipowner in negotiating the release of a vessel from a high-risk jurisdiction with an abandoned, problematic nickel ore cargo in need of disposal.  Managing Philippines legal action, cargo claims were defended and a charterparty indemnity claim was successfully resolved to minimize the owner's overall exposure and insurance recovery.

In a matter involving a bulk carrier stow collapse at sea during heavy weather, James pursued charterers for recovery of unpaid hire and defended unsafe stowage issues.
