David specialises in international trade and has extensive experience covering commodities and shipping disputes, physical transactions and the regulation of commodity derivatives trading and markets.

David acts for a broad range of clients including oil majors, state-owned oil companies, banks, independent traders and P&I clubs. He has represented clients in numerous High Court and arbitration proceedings, principally under sale and purchase agreements and charterparties.  He has completed two secondments with an oil major.

David’s non contentious work includes advising, delivering training and drafting compliance materials relating to market abuse, EMIR, MiFID and other regulation affecting commodity derivatives and physical commodities trading.

Acting for the Swiss trading arm of a Russian oil company in a High court claim for recovery of tax liabilities under sale and purchase contract indemnities.

Swiss metals trader – UNCITRAL arbitration

Acting for a Swiss metals trader in an UNICTRAL arbitration arising out non-delivery of steel coils and related recovery under a credit insurance policy.

Bunker supplier – counterparty default

Acting for a UK and Singapore based bunker supplier on issues arising out of counterparty default.

Acting for an oil major in a High Court claim for hedging-related losses on an oil cargo arising out of vessel breakdown and delayed delivery.

Vessel damage – LMAA arbitrations

Acting for the producer and shipper of phosphoric acid cargoes in arbitration claims for damage to chemical tankers.

Vessel detention – LMAA arbitration

Acting for a Swiss oil trader in an arbitration relating to a large demurrage claim arising from the detention of a vessel in Nigeria.

Acting as an expert witness on English law issues in a shipping dispute in the Panamanian court.
