Earlier this year the European Court of Human Rights held that protection for whistleblowers was a human right under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects freedom of expression. Issues relating to whistleblowing are seldom far from the headlines and, if mishandled, can attract significant adverse publicity for employers, not to mention the potential sums that can be awarded to a whistleblower.
