Stephenson Harwood LLP is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its presence in Piraeus, the maritime capital of Greece. The Piraeus team focuses on ship finance work, and is one of the most highly regarded and active ship finance practices in Greece.
Nigel Bowen Morris, Stephenson Harwood office managing partner for Piraeus, said:
"This milestone anniversary marks our commitment to the Greek shipping industry. When we established the office in 1996, we knew that our focus would be on ship finance and supporting what was then a booming industry. It is, of course, no secret that Greece has been particularly hard hit by the economic downturn. It is a testament to the level of maritime expertise in the country and region that this industry has managed to stay afloat throughout this period, and indeed to maintain its position of having the largest merchant fleet in the world. We look forward to continuing to work with our clients in the region as they further develop their business interests."
Mark Russell, global head of ship finance at Stephenson Harwood, said:
"Stephenson Harwood is recognised as having one of the world's leading shipping practices. Central to this is our having offices in key trading hubs, which allows us to offer advice which is tailored to the various jurisdictions across which we operate. The Piraeus ship finance team counts leading international shipowners, banks, corporates, lessors, P&I clubs, insurers, oil companies, traders, brokers and port operators across the eastern Mediterranean amongst its client base. The team is a core arm of our international ship finance practice."
Sharon White, chief executive of Stephenson Harwood, said:
"Ship finance is a fundamental practice area of the firm. We are continuing to invest in the practice area, as illustrated in our latest round of partner promotions, where we promoted Dora Mace-Kokota (London) and Chris Vartzis (Piraeus). The Piraeus team has built an unparalleled reputation for their understanding of the maritime market, and I am confident that they will continue to grow and further build on the success of the last twenty years."
The firm marked the anniversary with a celebratory reception held on Thursday 9 June at The Yacht Club of Greece. The 400 guests included some of the longest-standing clients of the team, some of whom have been with the firm since the opening of the Piraeus office.
Stephenson Harwood's ship and offshore finance team is widely recognised as being one of the best in the world. It has handled many of the 'stand out' transactions in the market and is a core part of Stephenson Harwood's global ship finance franchise. The team won the Marine Money Offshore's M&A Deal of the Year Award in 2015, were named Transport Law Firm of the Year in the 2014 Legal 500 awards and won UAE Maritime & Shipping Law Firm of the Year at the ACQ Law Awards in 2014.
