International law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has appointed a new partner, Barthélemy Cousin, to develop the Paris office's litigation practice. The new hire and expansion of the litigation practice will complement the existing offering to clients, and comes at a time when there is increasing demand for litigation work. Specialising in banking, finance, insurance and commercial litigation, Barthélemy has over 20 years' experience advising numerous major French and international companies in the banking, insurance, energy and transportation sectors.
Barthélemy joins from Norton Rose, where he was head of the French litigation department and had been a partner for the past eight years. Barthélemy's experience covers insolvency, court restructuring and security enforcement work focusing largely on enforcement of security for banks, asset financing issues and asset repossessions for the benefit of institutional creditors. He has represented French and international banks mostly on French law related matters including representing a major French bank in bankruptcy and liquidation matters. Barthélemy has worked on numerous general commercial litigation issues, including advising large French corporates on contractual disputes. He is one of the leading litigators on behalf of French banks in relation to insurance claims in large scale frauds perpetrated on banks. Barthélemy also has extensive experience in African litigation, particularly on OHADA (Organisation pour l'Harmonisation du Droit des Affaires en Afrique) matters dealing notably with enforcement measures, securities and commercial rules. Barthélemy has also appointed a team of three associates to help set up the new practice.
Senior counsel, Michel Bauer, is also joining the office in the finance practice. Michel is a specialist in finance law, with over 30 years' experience working with French and international investment banks. His expertise extends to all areas of bank finance, particularly asset based, structured finance, syndicated loans and export finance. Michel joins Stephenson Harwood from Crédit Agricole CIB where he led the London-Paris legal team in charge of financing. His arrival will further enhance the Paris office's leading finance practice.
The new practice launch and Barthélemy and Michel's appointments reflect the firm's focus to strengthen the current offering by recruiting high profile lawyers with expertise in strategic areas.
Alain Gautron, Managing Partner of Stephenson Harwood's Paris office, said "We are delighted to welcome Barthélemy and Michel to our team. These appointments support our overall strategy to develop the Paris office and demonstrate our investment in providing an excellent service to our clients and expanding our offering to reflect client needs."
