Extension of deadline for filing Employment Related Securities (ERS) annual returns

Linkedin

HMRC has announced that the deadline for filing ERS annual returns for the 2016-17 tax year has been extended from 6 July 2017 to 24 August 2017.

Some users have experienced technical issues with the Online Service, leading HMRC to extend the deadline. The announcement was made in HMRC's Employment-related Securities Bulletin No 24, published 23 June 2017. The bulletin confirms that no penalties will be levied until 25 August 2017, at which point the usual penalties will apply.

If you have not already filed your annual return for the tax year ending 5 April 2017 we recommend that you check that you have completed all the necessary on-line registrations to enable you to file your returns, and then complete and upload the templates as soon as possible and in any event by 24 August 2017. Please remember that even if there are no events to report in the tax year (such as the grant, exercise or surrender of a share option) a 'nil return' is still required for schemes that have been registered on the ERS online service.

The extended deadline will only apply to the 2016/2017 tax year, and next year we expect the filing deadline to return to the usual date of 6 July.
