Data Protection update - January 2014

Welcome to the first Data Protection update of 2014, our monthly bulletin on key developments in data protection law.

May we take this opportunity to wish you a very happy New Year!

In this issue, which covers news and updates for December and early January, we continue our coverage of the international development of data protection regimes, this time focusing on South Africa and the People's Republic of China.

We look at the ICO's recent activity, outlining a number of fines and undertakings issued in December, as well as the Upper Tribunal's first ruling relating to an appeal against an ICO monetary penalty notice. We also outline the ICO's current consultation on its complaints handling process.

We revisit Google, as part of our regular update on the backlash arising from its consolidated privacy policy, and finally, we provide our regular update on the draft EU Data Protection Regulation, focusing this time on the "one-stop-shop" mechanism.
