Data Protection update - October 2013

Welcome to the October edition of our Data Protection update, our monthly bulletin on key developments in data protection law.

In this issue, we provide an update on the much anticipated (and delayed) vote by the European Parliament on the European Commission's proposals for an EU Data Protection Regulation and examine some of the key proposals.

We also look at the ICO's recent activity, including undertakings and fines issued, as well as new guidance published on direct marketing.

In addition, we revisit Google and consider its recent failure to meet the French data protection authority's deadline set to bring its privacy policy in line with national data protection legislation, as well as Google's new "shared endorsements" policy which may stir up further data protection issues for the internet giant.

Finally, we discuss the current scrutiny of the US-EU Safe Harbor agreement and continued criticism from lawmakers in light of the US PRISM revelations
