Welcome to the March 2014 edition of our Data Protection update, our monthly bulletin on key developments in data protection law.
In this issue, we report on a key milestone for the European data protection reform which has now been approved by the European Parliament and which will now proceed to the next stage of discussions as part of the so-called ""Trilogue"" process.
We also look at the recent hacking of WM Morrison employees’ personal data and comment on the new ""cybersecurity"" law which seeks to set minimum cyber security levels and which is planned to come into force by mid-2016.
As part of our continuing update, we summarise the ICO's recent activity, outlining recent fines to Thames Valley Police and the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, and recent prosecutions and undertakings.
Finally, we also consider a new criminal offence under the UK Data Protection Act which is likely to come into force by the end of 2014, and look at the pending review of the Safe Harbor Framework.
