Sara is a specialist in domestic and international regulatory and criminal investigations. She advises firms and individuals challenging the exercise of powers by regulators and those accused of involvement in regulatory contraventions, market abuse, insider dealing, money laundering, fraud, corruption and bribery.

Sara was a prosecutor for the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and brought the first criminal prosecution by the FSA against a director for misleading the market (Regina v Rigby and Bailey), the first Listing Rule contravention, numerous market abuse cases and refusals of authorisation.

Sara advises in international criminal and regulatory investigations involving the SEC, the CFTC and the Department of Justice and in cases brought by European regulators, police forces and the SFO.

Previously a criminal barrister, Sara has extensive experience of advocacy before the Financial Services Tribunal, The Regulatory Decisions Committee of the FCA, the Crown Court and the Court of Appeal.

Conducted an internal investigation following a whistle-blower complaint that members of the client's team bidding for a PFI contract to provide services to the UK Government allegedly received confidential information from a former MoD employee who was subsequently employed by the client. 

Bribery allegations

Represented a global inter-dealer broker in relation to an investigation where staff were alleged to have systematically defrauded the firm, involving the first use by the FSA of powers under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act to agree a reduced sentence or 'plea bargain' for an assisting offender.

Kickback allegations - inter-dealer brokerage

Conducted an investigation into employees alleged to have paid kickbacks to clients to secure orders.

Bribery allegations - global bank

Advised the head of anti-corruption and bribery on matters relating to the UK Bribery Act 2010.

Money laundering allegations - state-owned Russian bank

Investigated allegations of money laundering for politically exposed persons in Central Asia by a state-owned Russian bank.

Advised on business conduct policy and procedures in respect of operations in the Nigerian oil delta.

Insurance fraud

Advised a reinsurer in relation to a claim worth US$ 250 million, who suspected an attack on an insured vessel had been faked and that the salvage company was complicit in the fraud.  

Mis-marking of hedge fund portfolios

Advising a hedge fund in relation to the mis-marking of portfolios.

Advising and representing Mr Vogt, a German citizen, in relation to the Serious Fraud Office’s (“SFO”) decision to charge him with conspiracy to defraud, alongside concurrent US DoJ investigations.

Allegations of LIBOR and FX manipulation

Advised on a number of investigations conducted by the United States Department of Justice Fraud and Anti-Trust teams in relation to alleged LIBOR and FX manipulation.

James Pearson, Managing Director of a global bank

Represent Mr Pearson who raised concerns with the FCA over the level of knowledge of FX Manipulation by the Bank of England. We assisted with our client's interviews by the US department of Justice at the US Embassy in London.

LIBOR manipulation investigation

Advising Brent Davies in relation to allegations of conspiring with the main indicted suspect at UBS and the rate setter at the Royal Bank of Scotland of the US Dollar LIBOR in this investigation conducted by the US CFTC, FCA, US DoJ and SFO.

FX Spot manipulation

Instructed by Chris Ashton of Barclays to advise and represent him in relation to the investigations by the United States Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations in conjunction with the UK Financial Conduct Authority and the Serious Fraud Office.
