Paolo is an experienced dispute resolution lawyer who regularly tackles complex multi-jurisdictional disputes. He is sought out by clients to lead on major, often business critical, disputes and investigations.

Paolo has a market leading practice in trade and commodity litigation with a particular emphasis on fraud investigations and asset tracing. His clients include major corporations, insurers, investment funds and traders.

He is regularly retained on high value and complex litigation and investigations often in relation to cases arising in Africa, South America and the Middle East. He is a fluent Spanish speaker.

Paolo also has specialised experience in assisting shipowning and insurance clients with kidnapping and "difficult situations" in some of the world's more challenging places.

Dispute arising out of UK government supply contract

Advising a major commodity client on its position after the UK government, as end buyer, rejected a cargo alleging that it was off specification.

Major contamination of oil tank in Mozambique

Advising cargo underwriters on their position in relation to the contamination of a diesel tank in Mozambique.

Contamination of cargo tank in Malaysia

Advising an oil major on its position against the shipowner in respect of a major contamination of an oil cargo in its storage facility.

Ythan

Advising various cargo underwriters on their position after the explosion and total loss of the vessel Ythan. We successfully managed complex litigation in the High Court, and then reached an agreement between all of the parties at a mediation attended by 40 people!

Ferry fire

Advising the Owner of a ferry and its insurers on their position after the fire and total loss of a ferry in Spanish waters.

Shipbuilding dispute

Acting for one of America's largest equity funds which had invested in a shipyard in the Middle East. Conducting the defence of two substantial arbitrations brought by a shipowner in relation to the constructions on two ships, and advising the equity fund on its position.

Dubai Valour 

Advising an International Group P&I Club and its shipowner member in relation to the two year illegal detention in Nigeria of the vessel DUBAI VALOUR and its crew members. In addition to managing litigation in Nigeria, we also applied to the English High Court for several innovative disclosure orders to successfully trace the assets of the responsible party once the vessel had safely been released.

Chilean Iron Ore mine

Advising a trading client on its position after it pre-financed product from an Iron ore mine in South America. The principal of the iron ore mine fraudulently diverted the funds and we assisted the client to make a recovery through proceedings and injunctions in the English High Court.

Fraud investigation for commodity trader

One of the world's largest commodity traders purchased a company in Latvia and discovered that the company had been drained of its assets by the previous management team. Paolo headed a team which conducted an investigation into the losses. We then successfully traced a large amount of the funds and succeeded in breaking into the trust structure of the responsible party.

Fraudulent claim in Dubai

We represented the world's largest independent oil trader in a dispute in the Courts of the UAE. A fraudulent claim in excess of US$ 100,000,000 was presented against our client. The claim was successfully defended in the Court of First Instance, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Paolo made various applications to the English High Court and managed teams of lawyers in the UAE.

After the re-instalment (post-coup) of President Kabbah's democratically elected government Paolo brought English High Court proceedings on behalf of Sierra Leone to recover the High Commission building in London, which had been disposed of at an undervalue during the crisis.
